The Rolling Stones formed in 1962 in London, England. At the time, they were part of the London R&B scene. They got booked at the Crawdaddy Club for what turned into an eight-month residency. A young publicist, Andrew Loog Oldham, signed a management deal with them and began promoting them. George Harrison of the Beatles was an early fan and encouraged Decca Records to sign them.
The band's first single, Chuck Berry's "Come On" reached number 21 in the UK in July 1963. In the fall, they had an even bigger hit with "I Wanna Be Your Man" which was a Lennon/McCartney (Beatles) song.
After that, they continued to become more and more well known. In 1964, they toured the US twice. In their own words, the first tour was a disaster. But by the second tour, they were wildly popular as part of the "British Invasion" of British bands on the heels of the success of the Beatles.
The Rolling Stones were more well known then the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones came from England while the Grateful Dead came from California.

The Rolling Stones, undoubtedly. Luther isn't known to everyone the way the Stones are. Great acts, both of them.
