The Roman soldiers got punished brutally, at least by our standards. The severity of the punishment depended on the infraction. Floggings were one form of punishment, (a centurion's badge of office was his vine stick, which he didn't hesitate to use) a deduction from pay, getting barley instead of wheat for his cooking and having to stand for an entire day outside an officer's tent wearing only their unbelted tunic and holding a clod of earth, were other means of paying for minor offenses. However if the man were guilty of a more serious offence, a death sentence was carried out. If he were guilty of sleeping on guard duty, he could be clubbed to death by the men in his unit whose lives he had put at risk. Soldiers who fled from battle could be crucified or thrown to the beasts, even though these punishments were reserved for the lowest classes and criminals and not given out to citizens. The most famous punishment was decimation. This was reserved for a unit which had fled from battle. One tenth of the soldiers were selected for execution. The remaining men in the unit had to set up their tents outside the walls of the camp.
The Roman army had a variety of disciplinary actions and most of them severe. If a man was guilty of a major offense, like disobeying orders in battle or falling asleep on guard duty, he could be beaten to death by fellow soldiers whose lives he had endangered. If a complete unit disregarded orders or mutinied, it could suffer decimation, when every tenth man was executed. The less severe punishments were floggings and demotions, putting the man on barley rations, making him camp outside of the fort, or having to parade in front of headquarters wearing a heavy helmet and holding out heavy rolls of sod.
Roman soldiers were punished according to their offense. And it was severe. At the "misdemeanor" level, such as talking in the ranks or falling out of step, a beating with the centurion's vine stick was usually in order. (The vine stick or "vitis" was the centurion's badge of office so to speak.) The centurions could also determine punishments on a whim and it is said that many a soldier had his back scared from the beatings. For more serious offenses, higher ranking officers were consulted, especially those that required the death penalty. There was a range of serious offenses punishable by death. If a man fell asleep on guard duty he was clubbed to death by his fellow soldiers because he had put their lives at risk. Individuals who fled from battle could be crucified or thrown to the wild beasts. (Yes, even though the soldiers were citizens and those types of deaths were reserved for non-citizens, the military was able to use them) If an entire unit fled from battle, a punishment called decimation was imposed. One tenth of the men were selected by lot and executed while the remainder had to camp outside the walls of the fort/camp and were issued barley for rations instead of wheat. For other, less serious offenses, Augustus liked to have the offender(s) stand at attention outside his tent with an unbelted tunic (the soldier's belt was his military symbol) while holding a log or roll of sod in their outstretched arms.
