The Second Industrial Revolution was associated with steel, chemicals, electricity, and oil. Henry Bessemer discovered a new process for manufacturing steel cheaply in large quantities. The chemical industry also improved when the Solway process of alkali production allowing the recovery of more chemical by-products. The process permitted increased production of sulfuric acid and laundry soap. Germany was a leader in forging this link (between science and industrial development), fostering scientific research and education. The most significant change for industry involved the application of electrical energy to production. Electricity was the most versatile and transport and transportable source of power ever discovered. It made the locations of factories more flexible and factory construction more efficient. Soon electrical poles, lines, and generating stations dotted the European landscape. Homes began to use electric lights. Streetcar and subway systems were electrified. Gottlieb Daimler invented the modern internal combustion engine and the automobile was born (and was available only to the wealthy). Henry Ford later made the automobile accessible to the masses. The automobile industry created a vast new demand for steel and imported supplies of oil.
