Slaves typically started work at dawn and continued throughout the day until sunset. They had long work hours and very few rest days, often laboring from sunrise to sunset, sometimes even longer during peak seasons like harvest.
On the Plantation, some slaves would have started work at the age of about four as a child-minder. They would usually start running errands and carrying water to the other slaves at the age of five and they would have been expected to work on the plantation at the age of seven or eight.

When the colonies required indentured servants or slaves it was to do the work. The first slave arrived in Jamestown in 1609 and after tobacco got a start in the colony workers were needed. Indentured servants didn't work out as well, so more slaves were brought in than indentured servants.
Slaves can start working soon after their master purchase them. They were called "the owned ones".

no older slaves did the hard labor. elderly slaves babysat the children until they were old enough to start working themselves. sometimes slave owners would have sex with their slaves to make more baby slaves so that when they grow they can do work. also some slave women were promised freedom if they had 15 babies with their slave owner.
