It was Sir Henry Bessemer who patented the process in 1856 to take pig iron disturbed by a current of air to turn it directly into steel. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant, was able to use the Bessemer process in his steel mills after the civil war to create the largest iron/steel works in America.

The bessamer process increased the quality of steel. This increased the viability of the use of steel for manufacturing and transportation--builiding bridges and railways. The railways, especially, impacted the US by increasing trade and making it easier to get goods to market.
It affected the steel and railroad industry. Iron was the main foundation of railroads and when the Bessemer process created massed produced amounts of steel, the railroad industry greatly increased to. The carbon in the iron in the older railroads made the foundation of those railroads brittle and not as sturdy as steel, the steel became an asset to railroad creation. The Bessemer process burns off the carbon in the iron, thus creating steel. This process made steel cheaper, and the people of the steel industry were positively affected because the people in the railroad industry wanted the steel for better rails. The railroad industry was positively affected because now it was safer and stronger. They can earn more money because there are less accidents and can ship more at one time.

Steel gave us the ability to make very tall buildings because the skeleton of a building is made using steel allowing man to make skyscrapers. The use of skyscrapers also meant that there was a need for elevators. The Bessemer process reduced the cost of producing steel, and it fueled the industrial revolution in Europe. It allowed skyscrapers, bridges, railroads, large ships and other things to be made less expensively. One version of the Bessemer process helped farmers since phosphates were a byproduct.
