Tsumanis do not erupt; volcanoes erupt.

Tsunamis are waves caused by friction between two plates underneath the ocean. When two plates try to move past each other, most of the time there is no issue. Sometimes, though, the plates will get stuck until there is finally enough pressure to push past the obstruction. This built-up pressure is released into the surrounding ocean and leads to tsunamis.

Japan sits at the border between four different plates and as a result, experiences many tsunamis.
