The official version of the time was that US Military leadership estimated likely American troop casualties as likely to be unacceptably very high if assault troops were landed on the main Japanese Islands. The use of the A-Bomb precipated the Japanese surrender and probably saved a great number of American Servicemen's lives. There is also a body of thought that believes the use of the A-Bombs' was, at least in part, revenge for Pearl Harbour.
