The Battle of Shiloh(or Pittsburg Landing as it is called by the North) was a two-day battle fought on April 6-7, 1862. At the end of the first day the Confederates held the advantage. During the night more Union troops arrived by river boat. This allowed the Union Army to turn the tide of battle on the second day and ultimately win the battle.

On March 7, 1862, Confederate General Earl Van Dorn attacked with 17,000 men the Union Army under General Curtis, deployed in a strong defensive position near Pea Ridge, overlooking Little Sugar Creek. After a day of hard fighting the Confederates failed to break through the Federal position. On the second day, Curtis counter attacked the somewhat exhausted Confederates forces' eastern and western flanks and succeeded in breaking through the Rebel lines, winning the battle.
