They helped the Romans to do their dirty/hard work. In addition, the slaves in Rome as in all ancient cultures, were the backbone of the society. Slaves were not only the manual laborers, but they were also secretaries and Accountants, teachers and cooks. There is even a record of a slave lending out his master's money on his own authority. Slaves were in charge of rentals as seen in the advertising from Pompeii. We would never have the writings of Cicero if it were not for his slave/secretary, Tiro, who was the one who published them.

Slavery made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Most slaves were bought by the owners of large landed estates. An abundant supply of labour enabled them to expand their estates at the expense of the small holdings of peasants. When the peasants were under economic distress, they took advantage of this to buy land on the cheap. Many peasants became landless and flocked to Rome to eke out a living. They swelled the unemployed or underemployed masses of the poor.
