They filled the role of the modern tank.
According to the Book of Maccabees, the ancient Greek armies came against Israel with armored elephants.
Hannibal
Hannibal ---- Believe it or not, a lot of armies utilized elephants. Not only were they powerful "tanks" in combat, but also symbols of power. One of the greatest military commanders to have ever used elephants in warfare was Hannibal Barca, the Annihilator. A leader of the ancient empire of Carthage, he is considered to this day one of the greatest generals of war to have ever lived. Did you know that Hannibal became blind in one eye during the Second Punic War? ~Apple Juice
Hannibal Barca (the city Barcelona is named for his family) was a general of the Carthaginian army. During the second war between Rome and Carthage (Second Punic War) he led an expedition from Spain into Italy and spent the next 14 years roving around, attacking Roman forces and trying to get Italian states to rebel against Rome. He could not take Rome as he did not have a siege train. And as Rome could not defeat him in Italy, they sent a force to North Africa to threaten Carthage city and Hannibal was recalled to defend it. He lost the ensuing battle and Rome imposed harsh terms on Carthage. After the war he became politically engaged and oversaw a rapid economic recovery for Carthage, which alarmed the Romans, who set about using local proxy armies to harass Carthage. Hannibal fled to Asia Minor where he was used by local states to pursue ongoing local wars. Rome got rid of the threat it thought he presented by having him assassinated.
The ancient Roman republic's legions were primarily infantry troops who had a large stake in defeating Carthage because they were land owners. As land owners they had a clear stake in preserving their wealth and defeating foreign threats. As mentioned earlier, the Roman military had developed a superior infantry formation called "legions". The legions were well disciplined soldiers who had a regular set of maneuvers that helped increase their chances in battles. The land forces of Carthage were not as powerful as their naval forces. The armies of Carthage were mercenaries with no particular loyalty to Carthage other than the monies Carthage paid them.

Elephants were used in ancient armies. They were used to disrupt enemy ranks through fear, loss of morale or breaking the enemy lines. Elephants often made cavalry horses of the enemy panic as well.
They defeated the armies of Carthage in the Punic Wars.
Ancient Rome had a strong well disciplined land army, its legions were a force to be reckoned with. What Rome lacked was the ability to move its troops to places where it could establish a land military stance from which to fight the armies of Carthage. Commercial shipping and in fact most shipping in the Western Mediterranean Sea was controlled by Carthage's advanced naval fleets. The goal then was to build a naval fleet from scratch. In a war with immense pressure from Carthage, building a naval fleet from almost nothing was something Rome had to create and it did so, not without losses and time.
A couple of the armies that were in Greece were the Athenians and the Persians.
Definitely ancient Rome would win in a battle against ancient Egypt. The Roman armies were better equipped and better trained and had the grit to keep pounding the ememy. The Egyptian armies, especially those when Rome's armies were at its strongest, were mostly mercenaries hired by the Ptolemies.Definitely ancient Rome would win in a battle against ancient Egypt. The wars began when Carthage sent its armies to Sicily, an island just southwest of Italy.
