The effect on America after the war of 1812 was that the Americans were given freedom.

America got the recognition of being a sovereign nation, and gained a better reputation from the British point of view. The American government proved it's might, but also showed that they could also be forgiving. America also became allies with Canada.

This is also the war that turned the White House white. After being intruded, British troops from Canada (as Canada was not a nation as of yet), burned the White House almost completely, this turned it from a dark gray colour, to black. The White House stayed standing, but was painted white for visual appeal.
