Broke. This prompted Mexican president Benito Juarez to suspend external debt payments to France, Spain and England in 1861. This in turn proved France with a good pretext to try to conquer Mexico and help the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The conflict that followed is known as the Second Franco-Mexican War (1862-1867); one of the most famous battles being the Battle of Puebla or Cinco de Mayo (May 5, 1862).
