I think most people got bored with all the congressional hearings. People who did not like Nixon found the scandal to be a reason to hate him. The Democrats won the White House in 1976 with a weak candidate, probably due in large part to the Watergate Scandal and Ford's pardon of Nixon.

What affect did the Watergate scandal have on the presidency and in the US?

Richard Nixon sent the country rolling with the Watergate Scandal. The country was still trying to recover from Vietnam War when this scandal came to the surface. The Watergate scandal was Richard Nixon trying to cheat the country into reelecting him into office.

Did the Watergate scandal affect Nixon's re-election chances?

Nixon was already in his second term and could not be re-elected again when the scandal broke. If you mean, did the watergate burglary affect the re-election of Nixon in 1972, I would say not. The burglary was foiled before anything was taken and would not have had great effect anyway.

What is the relevance today of the Watergate Scandal?

It is having very little effect now.In the wake of Watergate came campaign fiance reforms that drastically reduced the power of big donors. However, money never sleeps and the investor class through their Congressional representatives and a conservative Court have repealed and/or overturned all of the Watergate reforms. The Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 50 (2010) Supreme Court decision returned us to a system with no meaningful limits on money in politics and allows Political Action Committees to raise unlimited funds that get spent in the closing weeks to buy negative TV ads against candidates without equal resources. The result since the Supreme Court ruling is a congress unduly influenced by big money interests, mainly banks but other special interests as well.Currently, there is a drastic difference in the way the two parties raise money. One side raises most of it's money through large numbers of small donations. The other raise most of it's money through a small number of very large donations. We have returned to the system of unlimited, secret donations that were caused such a public outrage when uncovered by the Watergate investigations. Now, the populace is not displaying any such outrage.

How did Watergate scandal alter the balance of power?

The effects of the Watergate scandal did not by any means end with the resignation of President Nixon and the imprisonment of some of his aides. Indirectly, Watergate was the cause of new laws leading to extensive changes in campaign financing. It was a major factor in the passage of amendments to the Freedom of Information Act in 1986, as well as laws requiring new financial disclosures by key government officials. While not legally required, other types of personal disclosure, such as releasing recent income tax forms, became expected. Presidents since Franklin Roosevelt had recorded many of their conversations, but after Watergate this general practice ended, at least as far as the public knows. Since Nixon and many senior officials involved in Watergate were lawyers, the scandal severely tarnished the public image of the legal profession. In order to defuse public demand for direct federal regulation of lawyers (as opposed to leaving it in the hands of state bar associations or supreme courts), the American Bar Association, (ABA) launched two major reforms. First, the ABA decided that its existing Model Code of Professional Responsibility (promulgated 1969) was a failure, and replaced it with the Model Rules of Professional Conduct in 1983. The MRPC has been adopted in part or in whole by 44 states. Its preamble contains an emphatic reminder to young lawyers that the legal profession can remain self-governing only if lawyers behave properly. Second, the ABA promulgated a requirement that law students at ABA-approved law schools take a course in professional responsibility (which means they must study the MRPC). The requirement remains in effect. The Watergate scandals left such an impression on the national and international consciousness that many scandals since then have been labeled with the suffix "-gate" such as Koreagate, Contragate, Whitewatergate, Travelgate, Rathergate, "Zippergate" or Filegate in the U.S., Tunagate in Canada, Dianagate/Squidgygate and Thatchergate in the UK, and even Pemexgate and Toallagate in Mexico. The judging scandal in the pairs event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in which a controversial double gold medal was awarded to Russians Yelena Berezhnaya & Anton Sikharulidze and Canadians Jamie Sal & David Pelletier was termed "Skategate". In 2003 a scandal involving a group of Poland's key political figures and a Polish media magnate Lew Rywin was frequently referred to in Polish media as "Rywingate". Other impressions included Colegate, Sheikgate and Edgate. Watergate was a major political scandal which occurred in the United States in the 1970s, Its shocked the nation.

How did the anti war movement affect president Nixons decisions to remove troops from Vietnam and end the war peacefully?

The only affect the anti-war movement had on Nixon was the Watergate Scandal. The anti-war people were his enemy, and that's when he needed information (intelligence) about them; which of course led to Watergate. Ending the war peacefully? Nixon unleashed the most powerful and massive aerial bombing campaign in the history of warfare (excluding the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki in 1945). B-52 Stratofortress's did Nixon's talking!
