US Jet aircraft were primarily designed to shoot down Soviet bombers. Instead they were sent to Vietnam where those "intercepters" ended up being "fighter-bombers." In this manner they really began to evolve: The F100 Super Sabre, the first of the USAF Century fighters ended up fighting the longest, from 1962 until 1971...with 242 losses by the time of it's withdrawal from the war. This was the fourth highest loss rate behind the A4 Skyhawk with 362 losses; the F105 with 390 losses; and the F4 Phantom with over 700 losses. This is not counting the A1 Skyraider which was propeller driven and suffered 266 losses. The A4 Skyhawk, F8 Crusader, F100 Super Sabre, F101 Voodoo, F102 Delta Dagger, F104 Starfighter, F105 Thunderchief, all became FIGHTER BOMBERS. As the years rolled by, the F105 and the F4 Phantom II became the best fighter bombers of the war. But losses of the Thunderchief grew too grim, nearly half of the F105s produced (833) were destroyed in the war...consequently the F4 Phantom took over the job. And the USAF/USMC/USN new fighter and bomber had evolved into the F4 Phantom...a jet that could fight and bomb and serve ALL branches of the US Military. Ulitimately becoming the last ACE fighter plane of the 20th century for the United States.
