This was called sharecropping and it enabled the former slaves and their owners to both make money. The plantation owner couldn't farm the land by himself so deals were make to farm the land together. Poor whites also went in partners as sharecroppers with the land owners so as to survive. The north had devastated the southern land and survival was accomplished by sticking together and living off the land. Northern senators did everything to punish the south so money was scarce to re building. It took the south about 40 years to get back on her feet.

100 years is a century,but a decade is 10 years
The Confederation government did not survive the decade of post-war adjustments after the Revolution mainly because it was weak and unable to effectively govern the newly formed United States. It lacked the power to enforce laws, raise revenue, and regulate commerce, leading to economic instability and internal conflicts among the states. The experience of a weak central government under the Articles of Confederation ultimately convinced many Americans of the need for a stronger federal government, which led to the drafting of the Constitution.
During the 1970's, the economy in the United States became stagnant. At the beginning of the decade, the U.S. was still recovering from the Vietnam war, the inflation rate was high, and unemployment was also at an all-time high. Add this to a worldwide energy shortage, the U.S. economy was a mess for most of that decade.
