One answer

Matthew's Gospel says that the wise men followed a star to Bethlehem, although the author of Luke's Gospel seems unaware that there had been such a star. Ian Wilson, in Jesus: The Evidence, page 48 says, "The hard reality is that neither the Matthew nor the Luke nativity stories offers sufficient historicity (and the story of the wise men and the star appears only in Matthew) for anyone to be confident that there was a star at all."

Another answer

Read Matthew 2 ... They followed the star of Jesus Christ.

2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

The "wise men" followed JESUS' ANGEL.

"This is THE MEANING of the seven STARS... The seven STARS ARE THE ANGELS of the seven churches..." (Rev.1:20 NLT)

"...We have seen HIS STAR as it arose..." (Matt.2:2 NLT New Living Translation]

"This is the revelation FROM JESUS CHRIST, which God [the Father] gave Him concerning events that will happen soon. AN ANGEL WAS SENT to God's servant John so that he could SHARE the revelation with God's other servants."

"...He will SEND HIS ANGEL BEFORE YOU..." (Gen.24:7 NLT)

God SENT AN ANGEL [a STAR] before the wise men to guide them to Christ.

"...they departed; and, lo, THE STAR [ANGEL], which they saw in the east, WENT BEFORE THEM [it was MOBILE -- it MOVED], UNTIL IT CAME and STOOD over where the "young child" was [not a BABE in a manger, but]... they were come INTO THE HOUSE..." (Matt.2:9-11 KJV).

An angel told them where he was

AnswerGod sent a star( not an angel) to them Matthew 2

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him...

7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

Answer:

Well technically neither answer is correct, And the word never stated that it was three (3) men, ppl said that! They never stated that God sent the star. These wise men were not righteous men they were Chaldean from Babylon they were astrologers soothsayers they worked magic witch craft they were not godly men. That's how they knew through magic about the star. They came looking for Yahshua for a job in his kingdom this is what they did go from kingdom to kingdom looking to work in the kings court as a mystic. In the Greek, these wise men the word for them is: (magos)

1) a magus

a) the name given by the Babylonians Chaldean Medes, Persians, and others, to the wise men, teachers, priests, physicians, astrologers, seers, interpreters of dreams, augers, soothsayers, sorcerers etc.

b) the oriental wise men (astrologers) who, having discovered by the rising of a remarkable star that the Messiah had just been born, came to Jerusalem to worship him

c) a false prophet and sorcerer

Now Yahshua (Jesus) spoke of wise men in Mat 23:34in the Greek it's: sophos:

wise

a) skilled, expert: of artificers

b) wise, skilled in letters, cultivated, learned

1) of the Greek philosophers and orators

2) of Jewish theologians

3) of Christian teachers

c) forming the best plans and using the best means for their executionSo these were the right type of wise men and the other were workers of Satan I believe Satan sent that star they seen it may have been he himself being The Bible says he's the prince of the air and the god of this world and he disguise himself as an angle of light and he's called the morning star. This all so the wise men (Chaldean) would give word back to King Herod which was actually an Arab And put in office by Roman Gov not God, Herod was pagan. So Satan would use Herod to kill Yeshua. But God sent word to them in a dream not to go that way home.

(God speaks to all in dreams saint and sinner) Yes, Yahshua is called the Day/Morning star but Satan is just refered to as star also

Act 7:43

Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

the wise men never went to the manger...they came at least a year later, and met the baby jesus in his new home....as to what they followed, it may have been a star that set off the initial search but im leaning more towards the shekinah glory of God as being the directing light.
