Darwin's idea of how offspring inherited characteristics was wholly mistaken, Mendel's work would have been very useful support for Darwin's work but although Mendel sent a copy of his paper to Darwin, it was in German and Darwin didn't have it translated and so didn't realise it's importance.

This theory of gradualism (as it was called) was adapted into Darwin's theory to apply to the species and their gradual changes.
