Someone found out about their hiding place and betrayed them to the Nazis. The Nazis removed the bookcase and at first just saw Edith Frank, then they went to the next room and discovered everybody. Anne and Margot were sent to Bergen-Belsen where they both died from illness. Typhus.

Early on August 4th, 1944, The head of the local SD office, Julius Dettman, took a call that there were Jews hidden in the back rooms at 263 Prinzengracht. He said only that it came from "a reliable source". He sent Sgt. Karl Silberbauer and a few Dutch plainclothes policement to the address, and those in the annex were arrested. Dettman committed suicide immediately upon the German surrender, and no other information about who made the call was ever determined.
