A rod called a mandrel, the size of the bore, was placed in a clamp. Strips of iron or steel were heated in a forge, and wrapped and twisted around the mandrel. When the entire length of the mandrel was covered, the steel strips would be reheated, and hammered to weld them together. When completely welded, the mandrel would be removed. The outside of the barrel would be shaped by filing or grinding, usually in the shape of an octagon. The inside would be ground smooth, and if the firearm was to be a rifle, grooves would be cut inside the barrel with a rifling tool. The barrel would be fitted with a lock to fire the gun, and the barrel and lock secured to the stock.
