Before and well into the industrial revolution all clothes were custom made by hand and were very expensive or had to be made in the home. Poorer people never had new clothes, only secondhand clothes and articles passed on by others. The industrial revolution reduced the price of textiles. However, it wasn't till the late 1830s that a few large tailors' shops stocked ready-made clothing in standard sizes, and at first only overcoats. At that time, most fashion designs were intended to be tight-fitting and still had to be custom made.
