Tuesday morning, 3 February 1931 at 10.47 a.m. A very big earthquake happened, it spanned for about two and a half minutes, and on the Richter scale it was 7.8 and one of the biggest earthquakes in New Zealand.
The first victims of the earthquake was the people that ran out onto the streets and got hit by the masonry. Within minutes of the earthquake, fire began in three Napier chemist shops in the business district. Hastings and Napier suffered from fires and the firefighters had problems with their water supply. The main roads in both Napier and Hastings were blocked by mountains of rubble. Ten days after the quake, a powerful aftershock of magnitude 7.3 hit and made everything worse. The total number of people who died was 256.
The long term effects on the Napier landscape were quite substantial. The whole area tilted upwards by about seven feet. 2230 hectares were raised to sea level. Most of the major buildings in the city were completely destroyed. Roads and communications acsoss the whole area were cut. It just so happened, however, that the Royal Navy Ship, HMS Veronica, was docked at the Port of Napier. So, it was by way of the Ship's radio that the rest of New Zealand was notified of the calamity. People were afraid to enter their homes for days and found accommodations at the local Motor Camp or on the beach. Their were about 150 aftershocks in the 24 hours after the main shock. Over the next two weeks, there would be 525 such aftershocks.
most people living in Napier had never experienced an earthquake of this size before so it traumatized most people. also it ruined roads and train tracks so it was hard for people to get in or out of the city
It affected the people strangely as they had not experienced earthquake before much, so it scared them a lot. Written by someone from New Zealand.
The environment was slightly affected.
The 1931 Napier Earthquake lasted for two and a half minutes and measured about 7.8 on the Richter Scale
Time and hard work.
they did nothing
Napier. In 1931, New Zealand's deadliest earthquake devastated the cities of Napier and Hastings. At least 256 people died in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake 161 in Napier, 93 in Hastings, and 2 in Wairoa. Many thousands more required medical treatment
usually an earthquake occurs because underneath the earths crust are tectonic plates and when they move occasionlly one will get caught but the outside is still moving and that causes an earthquake
