Tuesday morning, 3 February 1931 at 10.47 a.m. A very big earthquake happened, it spanned for about two and a half minutes, and on the Richter scale it was 7.8 and one of the biggest earthquakes in New Zealand.
The first victims of the earthquake was the people that ran out onto the streets and got hit by the masonry. Within minutes of the earthquake, fire began in three Napier chemist shops in the business district. Hastings and Napier suffered from fires and the firefighters had problems with their water supply. The main roads in both Napier and Hastings were blocked by mountains of rubble. Ten days after the quake, a powerful aftershock of magnitude 7.3 hit and made everything worse. The total number of people who died was 256.
