Transistors made the early computers smaller. The first full-scale electronic computer, the Eniac, was made using vacuum tubes and took up seven large rooms. Transistors were smaller, used less electricity, and could do most of the jobs that vacuum tubes could do. So that meant they could build smaller, faster, and more complex computers.

Then from there transistors began to move to small scale integration, where multiple transistors were placed into small ICs for common, standardized logic tasks. Still, using those still took many circuit boards. The from there, things moved to large-scale integration (LSI), and later to very large-scale integration (VLSI). Each generation of IC allowed for more components to be stuffed into a single IC. During this development, since the ICs became larger and larger, they also figured out how to use less components to do the same tasks. So having a view of the whole in a single chip meant being able to do things more efficiently and eliminate some unnecessary components. So this makes things faster. Also, less traces meant less signal loss or corruption due to long wires and traces, and thus things could be clocked faster.
