Warfare, over the long run, led to the creation of the Roman Empire, which was the17th largest in history. The horizons of the Romans widened to the reach of the empire. Many romans migrated to areas of the empire and the Roman legions were stationed in the provinces (conquered territories) of the empire, especially the border ones. The empire gave the Romans a multicultural outlook. It also created great wealth for those who could benefit from trading, investment and large scale farming operations.
Warfare also made Roman culture militaristic and made victory in battle become highly valued. Military commanders were granted a triumph as a reward for victory. This was a procession in grand pomp to celebrate the victory and the victor. Triumphal arches were also built in honour of victors. They usually had reliefs depicting scenes of the victorious battle. During rule by emperors, the building of triumphal arches became restricted to victorious emperor. Victorious military commanders were hailed imperator by their troops. This did not mean emperor. It meant winner in battle.
