It is important that the wolves be reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park because predators help to maintain the health of the ecosystem in general. Without wolves, there are too many grazing animals, such as deer, and not enough food for them to eat.
Wolves were abundant in the Yellowstone area- until they were hunted, poisoned, etc. in order to remove what local Americans perceived to be threats to their livelihoods.
Yet because of less predation, elk and deer populations skyrocketed, this time causing a true threat to Yellowstone, due to the increased consumption of manifold species.
Scientists decided to capture 31 wolves from Canada and relocate them to Yellowstone. Thanks to abundant elk for prey, the wolf population tripled in 3 years, allowing the regeneration of willow and aspen, as well as more Songbirds, foxes, and ground squirrels.
Wolves were put out of their natural habitat due to hunting. Ecologists want to try and reintroduce them in places they used to be. So it's not just Yellowstone, but Yellowstone is the biggest one.
A better question would be, "Why were wolves exterminated from Yellowstone in the first place?"
I learned this in nursery school: "When you make a mess, you clean it up."
When humans destroy a vital part of nature for no reason (other than visceral hatred of a species), it is up to humans to undo the messy damage they did.
Re-introduction of wolves into their natural living area is one example of the above.
The primary circumstance that led to the reintroduction of wolves Yellowstone National Park was the over-population of deer and elk. However, scientists learned that simply adding wolves back into the park revitalized an entire ecosystem, from small and large game, trees, foliage, birds, soil retention,
and even the behavior of the river!
Wolves are important to Yellowstone National Park because if one animal type is to high the wolves will kill them and eat them for food and then that animal type won't be so high.
to kill all the elk that were eating all the plant
Wolves are a vital part of the ecosystem. The wolves stabilized the ecosystem by becoming the top predator.
This video tells it all:
when there were no wolves in yellowstone park yellowstone park had to much elks so when the wolves arrived again the wolves killed all the elks
The wolves currently there are decendents of gray wolves brought to the park from Canada in 1995.
Wolves have affected nearly every organism in Yellowstone. Watch the video to see how.
Because the wolves where actually imported, and people living near Yellowstone often claim the wolves are pestering lifestock, pets, and kids.

When wolves were wiped out in Yellowstone Park, the elk number rocketed and threaten the environment. Wolves have since been reintroduced and the elk number have returned to a sustainable level.
