Women in the Civil War served as nurses, vivandieres (a women that provides food, provisions, liqueurs to soilders), sutlers (a peddler who sold goods to military units in the field), Union or Confederate soilders, or spies.

Some became nurses. Others, such as Molly Pitcher, chose to help out by bringing water to soldiers during the heat of battle. Many women chose to disguise themselves as men and fight.
