I spent many years studying Spanish in England (5 to be precise!), but it wasn't until i came to Argentina that my Spanish really started to improve. Whilst it is commonly observed that living in a spanish-speaking country is the best way to learn the language, i don't believe this to be unconditionally true (i lived in Finland for 9 months but cannot speak a word of Finnish. What really made a difference for me was actively learning whilst in the country, by which i mean attending Spanish classes.
I was recommended this school by a friend and it worked out very well for me. My Spanish improved no end whilst i was taking the classes (i advanced through the various levels of Spanish in my time there). I found that before i started taking lessons i would become very lazy with my Spanish, and i was content merely to 'get by' on what i knew prior to them. Since the lessons i have realized the extent to which i became apathetic. Speaking as i do now, which i would adjudge to be a high intermediate level, i have not only integrated far better into life in Buenos Aires, but find that i enjoy living here more as a result (which is not to say it was not enjoyable beforehand!).
To summarize, through my experiences of both travelling and living abroad i have found that whilst it is futile to learn a language without being surrounded by it, it is also somewhat futile to be surrounded by it without actually immersing yourself within it. The key to learning Spanish successfully and efficiently is to not only travel to a Spanish speaking country, but partake in Spanish lessons during your time there. (Once again, i would recommend Expanish to anyone who was aiming to learn Spanish or adapt to life in Buenos Aires)
