On the Australian coat of arms are two of the country's most well known native animals: the Kangaroo and the Emu. they are not national symbols, as there is no national faunal emblem of Australia, but they are clearly recognisable as Australian. The emu and the kangaroo are on the Australian coat of arms, firstly because they are unique to the Australian continent, and secondly because they represent forward progression. Neither animal is believed to be capable of taking a backward step easily.

Putting them on the emblem means we "advance Australia" as sung in our national anthem. These creatures symbolise progression forwards. Whether or not the emu can actually walk backwards has been a matter of debate for some time. Whilst there is nothing in the emu's physiological makeup to suggest they cannot walk backwards, the fact remains that no emu has ever been observed to walk backwards. Though many may wuestion the veracitty of the story, even the Australian Government's website for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade states that "It is thought the kangaroo and emu were chosen to symbolise a nation moving forward, reflecting a common belief that neither animal can move backwards easily." There is no official link to the National Anthem, but the symbolism can be seen.

In addition, there is symbolism present on the Australian flag. The Southern Cross, which features on the flag, is clearly visible in the night sky from any point in Australia. Though not limited to Austalia's skies, it has come to be associated with Australia, as early sea explorers used it to navigate as they sought the fabled 'terra Australis Incognita' of the Southern Hemisphere. The British flag (or Union Jack) in the corner of the Ausalian flag, symbolises Australia’s historical links with Britain, which colonised Australia. The large seven-pointed star known as the Federation Star or the Commonwealth Star represents the six original states and the territories of the Commonwealth.

Australia's national floral emblem is the Golden Wattle. It can be seen on the coat of arms, but it is also significant because Australia's national colours, green and gold, were taken from the Golden Wattle.
