Buddhists' method of meditation is called "anapan sati dhyan".In this method of dhyan, incoming and outgoing of breath is watched.Inhalation and exhalation are watched. In otherwords, they witness the incoming and outgoing breath. Normally, our breath is shallow, but the moment you watch the breath, it becomes longer and deeper.Simply by waching, all the involuntary functions of the body become subject to qualitative change in their movements.Watching affects even the circulatory system of the body.
In the first place, the Buddha died many years ago. However, before he became enlightened, one of the techniques he practiced was Vipassana. It involves watching the breath. You simply sit comfortably, perhaps with legs crossed, back straight, and you watch as the breath comes into your belly and leaves your belly. No alteration of the breathing is needed. Eyes closed or half-open. If your awareness leaves your breath (as it almost certainly will!), simply notice, "ah, I am not watching my breath," and bring your attention back to your breath. Begin with five or ten minutes a day, in the morning or around sunset. Increase the time as you feel stronger.

I'm Bhuddist, no not just people see Bhudda...who is Siddhartha, it's believed that only holy monks and people that meditate can communicate with Bhudda, but only by meditating or dreams. Well that was what I was taught anyway :)
the Bodhi Tree was just a normal tree before Siddhartha meditated under it so he just randomly picked any tree, maybe with leaves that shades underneath from the sun so he wouldn't be disturbed by heat. People named it because it was near siddhartha when he was enlightened.
After his son leaves, Siddhartha meditates by the river and realizes that life is inevitable. He and Vasudeva meditate by the river, listening to the sound of the "Om" and Siddhartha no longer doubts his life or second guesses himself. He is at a state of Peace, and his enlightenment shows. Therefore, Vasudeva leaves Siddartha as the new ferryman. Word is out that a wise man lives on the river, and Govinda seeks out for his advice. Siddhartha tells him that enlightenment cannot be taught, it has to be acheived through your Self. Knowledge can passed along, but you must earn your own wisdom. He tells him that the word is complete, and you have to learn to accept it as it is. Govinda then kisses Siddhartha on the forehead, and through that, he too reaches enlightenment
Siddhartha Gautama is the founder of Buddhism. Interestingly enough, you could say it was because he was determined to stay against a tree and meditate - and not arising until he reached Enlightenment. It took about 49 days, but after that, he claims to have reached Enlightenment.
