Modern Christians see no difficulty in reconciling the description of a cruel and jealous God depicted in the Old Testament with that of a loving and merciful God as depicted in the New Testament. However, almost two thousand years ago, this was a matter of some concern among various Christian groups.
One solution adopted in various degrees by Gnostic Christians was to see the Old Testament God as an inferior God, who at the time of creation did not realise that there was a greater God in the higher heavens.
