To get a companion is World of Warcraft you either have to be 1 of the 2 things. First you either have to chose between Warlock or Hunter( only classes that provide the ability of having a pet). Second the Warlock has to lvl 2-5 to receive first companion( minion ). Also the hunter has to be level 10 and has to complete a quest to learn to tame beasts. Well there is your answer and if anyone would like to make my answer better or improve fell happy to do so. Thanks

A companion could also be a pet (combative or not) which anyone can have. there are many vendors or mobs that drop them. You can also buy them off the AH........................................................................................................................................
Now because you are required to merge with a Battle.net Account, for doing so you will receive a companion penguin called Mr Chilly
Combat Pets: Hunters, Warlocks, Frost Mages, and Unholy Death Knights all have a permanent pet that they can use for fighting, with hunters and warlocks being able to choose which one they want to use. Hunters can tame beast found in the world to use while warlocks just learn the spells that summon their demon minions. Frost mages and Unholy Death Knights do not get to choose what their pet is, there is only one, the Water Elemental (Frost Mage) and the Ghoul (Unholy Death Knight).
Non-Combat Pets: There are many ways to get non-combat pets in World of Warcraft. Most capital cities have a vendor in or near them that will sell a cheap companion, as well as various other vendors out in the world. They also drop off of certain bosses in Dungeons and raids, and there are a few quest lines that will reward you with a pet. If you REALLY REALLY want a pet and are having trouble finding them in game, you can also purchase certain pets in the Blizzard Store online.
If by companions you mean vanity pets (the little non-combat pets), they get them the same way all characters do - as rewards from quests, achievements, special events or through the trading card game codes.
As for combat pets, like the Hunter's pet, Druids do not get one - they are not a pet class.
Basically, when you recruit a friend, you send them an invitation through Battlenet. They receive a code to join, they join. The link in the related links section has all the information that you should need regarding the Recruit-a-Friend program. It is to the Blizzard FAQ for R.A.F.
