You have to get him to talk. :) Start a conversation and get him to talk about himself. If he seems uncomfortable with this give him some simple information corresponding to your question or apologize and start with a new question. He will probably answer very simple, one or two word answers, at first, but being patient with this benefits. Shy people are usually shy because they lack confidence, and talking about oneself boosts confidence; eventually he will feel like you two are friends (even if he is still a little afraid to call you out in a crowd). :) Good luck.
