This will depend or rather or not the pot has rusted or not. You can use a scouring pad and abrassive detergent,or salt on a lemon half.
I love cast iron pots. If you keep them clean they are never too old.

Rinse the pot thoroughly with warm water and dry it with a clean towel. Repeat the process if necessary until the pot is clean and shiny.
Cast iron pots need to be seasoned before their first use and then after this it is relatively easy to look after them. Right enough, do not use soapy water to clean them because it will not work.
Generally, just using an iron pot to cook will provide you with an adequate amount of iron. Cutting in you iron pot is not advisable as it can be dangerous.
