Volume
We need to speak at an acceptable volume because it :
shows that the audience that we are confident
signals that we know our subject matter well
signals that we are prepared
helps the audience to pay attention to what we are saying
Size of the room : If the room is large , speak at a louder volume and project your voice so people at the back of the room can hear you .
If the room is small , do not speak too loudly .
Size of the audience : If you are speaking to a large number of people (e.g. the entire class), project your voice.
If you are presenting to a small group of people , lower your volume -- you do not want your audience to think that you are shouting at them!
Purpose of the presentation : If your presentation is meant to entertain , then speaking loudly at appropriate junctures is acceptable.
If your presentation is on a serious topic, maintain an appropriate volume that is neither too loud nor too soft.
Maintaining Posture
DO: Stand up straight
-- This shows the audience that you are confident , respectful and prepared.
-- Standing up straight also helps you to project your voice better.
Relax your neck and shoulders
--This will help you breathe better and maintain a good volume.
Use appropriate hand gestures
-- This is another sign of confidence and will help you to emphasise an idea or point.
Move at appropriate points
-- Moving your body naturally at appropriate points during the presentation shows the audience that you are comfortable and in control.
DON'T: Slouch
-- This shows the audience your lack of confidence and respect.
-- It also makes it harder for you to project your voice.
Put your hands in your pockets
-- This indicates that you are nervous or unsure of your presentation.
Use too many hand gestures
-- While some gesturing is fine, too many hand gestures will distract the audience.
Move too much
-- Pacing and rocking your body back and forth are signs of nervousness.
To deliver your speech effectively, practice it several times to ensure you are familiar with the content. Make eye contact with your audience, speak clearly and confidently, and use gestures to emphasize key points. Remember to breathe and pause when necessary to maintain a steady pace.
