From Union Station, you can walk or take a taxi or bus east (approx. 6 blocks) on Jackson Blvd. to Dearborn St. where you can catch a Blue Line subway train which will take you all the way below ground, above ground, and at ground level to O'Hare Airport (end of the line).

While the above answer is true, there is a much closer Blue Line train station.

Exit Union Station on the Clinton Street side. About two and a half blocks south there is a large bridge passing OVER Clinton Street (this is the Eisenhower Expressway). Underneath this bridge is the entrance to the Blue Line Clinton Street subway station. Note that you will have to go down stairs to the payment level, but there is an escalator down to the train platform from the payment level. So if you cannot use stairs, you may prefer the above option.

If you are traveling on a weekday at just the right time, there is also a Metro North Central Service (NCS) train that departs from Union Station. Take it to the O'Hare Transfer station. This lets you out outside O'Hare Parking Lot F. The free parking lot shuttle runs about every 15 minutes and will take you to the free Airport Transportation System (ATS, also known as the "People Mover") which serves all of the O'Hare terminals. Allow at least 30 minutes to get from the O'Hare Transfer station to your terminal.

This is definitely comfortable and convenient, but there are very few trains and they only run on weekdays. Be sure to buy your ticket at the Metro window in Union Station because there is an extra $2 charge if you pay on board the train when the ticket window is open.

Of course, you can also take a taxi. If you are on a tight schedule and it is not rush hour, this will get you there much faster than any other option, but might cost around $50 with tip.

Walking would be the cheapest way. It's about 7 or 8 miles, so would probably take 3 hours or so.

The cheapest fast way would be to take the Orange Line "L" train. The fare is $2.25 and you would ride to the Loop, getting off at the Quincy stop - a ride of about 25 minutes. From the Quincy stop, you will exit onto Wells Street. Walk along Wells to either corner of the block - Adam is north, Jackson is south - then walk 3 blocks west, past the Sears Tower, just over the River (don't worry, it's more like a stream in width), and you'll see entrances for Union Station. The old original main hall is 1 more block, but you don't need to go there unless you want to look at the old architecture - trains actually departs from the area right next to the river.

There is no place in Chicago called "O'Hara." The larger of the two airports in Chicago is named "O'Hare."

You can take the "L" from Midway to O'Hare with one transfer. At Midway, board the Orange Line toward the Loop. Ride this to the Clark/Lake elevated station in the Loop. At Clark/Lake exit the train and follow the signs for a free transfer to the Blue Line subway platform which is down three levels. Board a train with "O'Hare" on the destination board and ride it to the end of the line, which will be O'Hare Airport.

Midway to Clark/Lake takes a little less than 30 minutes. Clark/Lake to O'Hare takes about 45 minutes. With a few minutes waiting and a few minutes for the transfer, count on it taking about an hour and a half to get from Midway to O'Hare. Factor in additional time to get through security to your gate at O'Hare (I'd allow at least 30 minutes if you're not familiar with O'Hare) to determine how long it will actually take to transfer.
