Before you replace timing gear or belt check codes with code reader, may be a crankshaft position sensor. Sensor is very easy repair and L300 isn't going anywhere if that sensor is malfunctioning.

A Saturn 3.0 timing belt noise can indicate that the belt is becoming worn down. It can also indicate a bad gear.

The timing in a Saturn is not adjustable. The ignition timing is computer controlled by the Ignition control module located underneith your coil packs. if there is an issue with engine valve timing, you must replace all timing components, ie... timing cam gears, crank gear, hydralic tentioner and guides.
The timing gears last the life of the engine and then some.
The mark on the cam gear should be at 6 o'clock and the mark on the crank gear should be at 12 o'clock.
If the timing marks on the crank gear and cam gear are lined up before you install the chain, you are good to go.

you need to pull the valve cover and oil pan and front cover and then you can replace the upper timing chain on the altima but if you are going to do this job i would recommend you replace the gear that hooks the lower and upper chain together this is called the idler gear and it is the one that causes the noise all the time.
The Ford 4.9 liter ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 cylinder does not use a timing belt or a timing chain . It has a gear on the end of the camshaft that meshes with a gear on the end of the crankshaft
