The easiest way to figure this out on a running computer is to press the Windows key, hold it and then also press the pause key so that they are held down at the same time. That takes you to system properties and tells you at the top of the page whether you have it or something else.
Another way, like if your machine is dead, it to look is to see if there is a certificate of authenticity label attached to the PC, and that the label says it has XP. That doesn't always mean anything, since XP could have been removed.
If the machine in question has a multiple boot screen coming up, it might say it has XP on the list of choices. Then if you select it and it works you would know. If not, then you might want to either repair the XP installation or finish removing its remnants.
