The fuel pump on a 1989 Chevy Celebrity is in the fuel tank. To change the fuel pump:

1. Remove the battery ground wire.

2. You are going to be working with gasoline. Use appropriate gloves and have a fire extinguisher handy. I like to do it in the open so gasoline vapors will not build up.

3. Drain the fuel tank. It should be empty if at all possible.

4.Raise the car to an appropriate height for your working convenience, and put it on jack stands. It will need to be high enough to pull the fuel tank out.

5. Remove the fuel filter. Remove the fuel return line. Remove the fuel filler and vent hoses. Unplug the electrical connector. .

6. Loosen then remove the bolts that hold the straps up.

7. The tank should now be loose and lower to the ground so it can be pulled our from under the car.

8. Remove the circular lock ring that holds the gauge assembly/fuel pump in place.

9. At this point you will be able to pull the gauge/pump assembly out of the tank.

10. Replace the fuel pump. They usually come with instructions. At this point it is also a good idea to replace the filter on the end of the fuel pump, some warranties require that the filter (often referred to as a "sock") be replaced.

Basically reverse the process to reinstall.
