There are three different types of cloudyness that I am familiar with. Grey cloudyness in newly set up tanks which is caused by millions of tiny air bubbles suspended in the water. This will go away given time. Green cloudyness which is caused by millions of tiny algae and/or infusoria cells suspended in the water. Which should be cleaned out by a few large water changes and a reduction in the amount of light the tank receives each day. The first two types of cloudyness are messy or unsighlty but are not really dangerous. The last is bad news because it means there is something very wrong in the tank. It is another greyish cloudyness, often accompanied by the water having a very nasty stink. This is caused by decay and bacteria. The only thing to do in this case is strip down the tank and thoroughly clean/scrub everything. Then when you set the tank up again, stick to the basic rules of fish keeping which are as follows. :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. Every tank needs a permanently running filter. :- Every tank needs to have at least 50% of its water changed every week. Any less water to inches of fish, or the lack of a filter and not doing the required water changes and I can guarantee that it is only a matter of time before you have health problems with your fish.

Cloudy water is an indication of hard water and is therefore not adequate for fish, regardless of type. Try using distilled water or water fortified with specific minerals needed to allow your fish to survive.

Whether or not a tropical fish can survive in cloudy water depends on why the water is cloudy. If there has been a spike in ammonia or nitrates, it can be deadly to fish. Tropical species tend to be more sensitive to severe water changes than freshwater fish.
