Some brief prayers may be said while sitting, but the main prayers at the center of each of the 3 daily Jewish services are said while standing -- they are called the Amidah, which literally means standing. Jews traditionally face Jerusalem while saying the Amidah, but because Jewish traditions developed before good surveying technology, Jews throughout most of the world simply face east while praying. Also, Jews traditionally sway during the Amidah in order to "love the Lord with all your strength," and there are several points in the Amidah where it is traditional to bow. Jews do not traditionally kneel during prayer, but there is one prayer where, on Yom Kippur, some Jews prostrate themselves. In the daytime Amidah, Jews traditiionally say the prayers to themselves (frequently mumbled) and then the prayer leader chants the prayer in what is called the reader's repetition, with the congregation responding at various points.
