However, scientists were sceptical about this theory, as the short time it took prey to die was inconsistent with the amount of time normally taken for bacteria to cause death.

More recently, scientists have discovered that the bite of the Komodo dragon delivers a powerful venom which thins the blood if its prey, increasing blood flow and creating a state of shock in the victim. The gaping wound caused by the Komodo dragon's sharp teeth enable the venom to flow more easily.
