Interconnecting a set of LANs using switches is called Switched LAN
hubs, switches or routers.
Managed switches are purchased in order to ensure maximum efficiency when connecting several computers and systems to a single server. They work well as LAN solutions.
Not really - they operate at the Data Link layer using the MAC address and therefore don't really segment a network. There are some managed switches that can do this or by using VLAN configurations, but ordinary switches will not really segment a LAN.

Routers operate at layer 3. LAN switches operate at layer 2. Ethernet hubs operate at layer 1.
In LAN we can add as many system depending upon the number of ports in switch and how many switches you are using.
I suppose you could use older-style hubs instead of switches, it would work, although it would certainly limit available bandwidth.
