Application specific integrated circuit
MPLS
It combines switching and routing
routing is the gateway whereas the switching is where the internet cables are plugged.
Loaded question. This depends on the Cisco switch and it's a very technically detailed answer - unique to every switch model. The short answer is that switches that are "modular" allow you to have routing functionality inside one or more "modules" or "cards" of the switch. Some switches allow routing to occur on each "line card", other solution allow a switch to share a single "card" to do all the routing for the entire switch. Routing and switching can be configured via a single terminal interface session - known as "native", whereas some switches separate the routing terminal and switching terminal - known as "hybrid". If that isn't enough info, go to cisco.com and use their search engine to find the "installation guides" of your model.
Packet Switching refers to the transfering of the packet from 1 node to the other. Where as Cell Switching ,means the switching of a cell from 1 network to the other. Pls note that Packet and Cells are 2 different forms. Packet itself has header and pay load and but Packets are variable in size unlike cells which are fix. When packets are switched, the Packet Switch is used and that Switch looks for the next hop in its routing or forwarding table but when a cell is switched, ATM switches are used and the cells actually carry the data and the header and travels from 1 ATM switch to the other. The ATM switches donot use the complex method as Packet Switches use.
If you want to go into Routing & Switching it is better to take the CCNP because it gives you more hands-on experience with routers and switches. Whereas the CCSP focuses on security and software.
A network device that forwards traffic based on layer 3 information at very high speeds. Traditionally, routers, which inspect layer 3, were considerably slower than layer 2 switches. In order to increase routing speeds, many "cut-through" techniques were used, which perform an "inspect the first packet at layer 3 and send the rest at layer 2" type of processing. Ipsilon's IP Switch and Cabletron's SecureFast switches were pioneers in cut-through switching.
Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and current Cisco network switches. (Earlier switches ran CatOS.) IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a multitasking operating system.

Static routing is fixed, alternative routing is dynamic and therefore adaptive. If a primary route is fails, static routing will not adapt and routing is lost. However, alternative routing will dynamically change in order to maintain routing.
Switches are on the second layer of the OSI model (Data Link); they do filtering based on host MAC addresses. You may also see a third layer switch; they not only provide all switching capabilities but some layer three routing capabilities too.

IP base support static routing and default routing but ip services supports dynamic routing like ospf ,bgp and eigrp.
