On December 1st, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. Although this was not the first time such a thing had happened, it was the tipping point during a period of strong racial tension and lead to a major boycott on the Montgomery Bus system. Rosa Parks' act of resistance in the face of oppression became a powerful symbol for the Civil Rights Movement and contributed to the dissolution of segregation.
