Do animals in captivity live longer than animals in the wild?

Yes and no. The depending factor is how well the animal is taken care of in captivity. If it is not given the right environment or fed correctly it will not live. Animals in the wilderness at least can fend for themselves for the most part.

Why is life different for animals in captivity?

Animals in captivity tend to live longer because they are better cared for versus animals in the wild who have to fend for themselves. Captive animals are fed on a regular basis, have no predators and are generally more healthy. That is the reason why majority of the zoos are intended to preserve a species and act as a sanctuary for the endangered animals. All though some zoos bring sick or injured animals into their sanctuaries sounds good, it is sometimes not. In some zoos the animals are released when they are better but the forget some things. For example a turtle who got stuck in beer can rings was taken to a zoo and had to be in a wagon as it lost circulation in it's legs and is still living today however if it was not in captivity it most likely would have died of suffocation not long after.
