They run very fast on the water, so they don't sink. If you slap your hand down really hard in the pool, it hurts. This is because the water is hard if you hit it hard.

So when the lizard runs, its like his feet slap the water and make it hard, and before it turns soft again he moves his foot.

Update

The Basilisk Lizard actually lifts his feet from its toes first to help in run on water and moves fast.
