Here are some morale boosters I learned from years of working for a major bank:

  • Offer the option of 4 ten-hour shifts or 3 13-hours shifts (a 39 hour week)
  • Make it easier to get paid or unpaid time off
  • relax the dress code
  • offer (decent) rewards for process improvement suggestions
  • Pick one holiday a year where the employees don't get the day off, but come into a day-long party at work. Officially they would still be expected to work, but you'd know ahead of time that very little work would happen that day. Our department did an all-day halloween party with events, food, and casually slipping in work where possible. But only once a year.
  • recognition is always a problem. Find more ways to recognize: performance, attendance, etc. are the ordinary ways. Find a new way: peer-to-peer writeups for recognition are always good. A person on productivity probation could get recognized for the smallest improvement.
  • at-work library: "donate a book/take a book" for the breakroom
  • at work coupon file, for sharing coupons organized by categories.
