Best Answer

Boxer motors function on the same principles as all other internal combustion engines. The characteristic that defines a boxer motor is that it must have multiple cylinders, all cylinders must lie in the same plane, and some of the cylinders must be on the opposite side of the crankshaft centerline from the other cylinders. The pistons in those cylinders "oppose" each other. Usually opposing pistons are paired such that the exhaust stroke of one occurs simultaneously with the power stroke of the other in the pair. The advantage of this layout is that it results in the lowest possible height of a motor with a given bore size. It can also result in a very smooth running vibration controlled engine if crankshaft and firing order are selected so that power strokes on each bank are exactly matched by power strokes on the opposing bank.
