The interactions of waves with other waves affect the height of a wave. When wave trains meet other similar ones, if they coincide or phase then amplitude increases (counter interference). But, when the top of one train coincides with the bottom of the other train, the wave trains cancel each other out because of destructive interference.
Winds influence the height of the waves by the following ways:
1. Wind speed or strength relative to wave speed- the wind must be moving faster than the wave crest for energy transfer.
2. The uninterrupted distance of open water over which the wind blows without significant change in direction.
3. Width of area affected by fetch.
4. Wind duration.
5. Water depth.
A wave will break when it's height becomes greater than 1/7 of the wave length.
