By performing meditation. Typically meditation on the breath. By watching thoughts come and go while performing meditation we learn that all things are transitory and illusory (in the sense that our mind controls how we perceive things and events and we control how we react to them) . Once we learn / remember that all things are transitory and illusory we realize that we can control how we react to events and we can respond in a controlled and compassionate manner.
